Risky Business (1983)

July 2nd, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there’s more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise’s effortless charm and the movie’s timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. –Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Risky Business DVD
For those of us who grew up and were in high school in the 80’s, especially the early 80’s I think this is a great movie. Tom Cruise is great as Joel Goodsen, he projects the kind of innocence that I think a lot of us who grew up in the burbs in the 80’s had. That time was kind of a throwback, although there was a little drug use such as the pot in the movie, I think the drug culture was not as big as in the mid 60’s and 70’s. AIDS had still not hit yet. Reagan was king and most kids were nice kids trying to do good in school, please their parents, and set themselves up for a productive future, as Joel in the movie. The story is good, although a little unbeleivable, as a small mistake Joel makes becomes a huge problem. Mainly it reminds me a lot of guys I went to high school with, the clothes we wore, having to ride a bike around instead of driving. All the stuff high school kids in the 80’s did and had. It is a great movie and a classic from the era.
Customer Review: The Girl Next Door Of The 1980’s
When I first obtained this movie I didn’t know what to expect. Many times I saw this movie lying for rent in blockbuster, it had a catchy cover but the synopsis of the back cover never caught my attention. It wasn’t until one of my friends gave away a whole bunch of 80’s flicks away and guess what? Risky business was there; so I went ahead and gave it a chance.

For those who are unfamiliar with the story of the movie then don’t worry it’s quite simple. The movie’s plot revolves around the character of Joel (played by Tom Cruise) who is the ideal son; he gets good grades, perfect attendance, top of his class, and plus he is very obedient to his parents…..until.. Both of Joel’s parents decide to take a trip out of town without Joel. They leave Joel the responsibility of the house, car etc. But when Joel’s friends keep pushing him to take a chance at taking risks and having a good time Joel doesn’t hesitate to think twice. So up to know everything is fun and games….until.. Joel meets a young charming prostitute named Lana (played by Rebecca de Mornay) who teaches him how to have a good time. there’s a lot more story in the picture that of course is not new, it has been seen and used in many recent teen flicks, like The Girl Next Door, Orange County, American Pie. Actually the story of this movie is very similar to that of The Girl Next Door. for example; good boy gone bad, boy meets a hot girl which he thinks is out of his league, there’s a pimp involved who control’s the hot girl. All of these details are reminiscent in both flicks

As well the movie has some of the most memorable scenes, along with an awesome soundtrack from Tangerine Dream… Tom Cruise’s first big staring role is still worth every penny even if it’s heavily dated.

MY PERSONAL RATING: 4 OUT OF 5

Here are Internet businesses that can be started from your home with low expenses and little training required. They are listed below. First of these enterprises you can home start is a common bookkeeping service. Popular because people love or hate it, bookkeeping service is mostly the latter.

The hate part, ironically, helps you to get business the easiest. You do the part the owners hate. Just that simple. Managers and owners love to market and sell their products as a high percentage rule. They do not usually have time or inspiration to keep their boring books up to date.

This is even though they know that it is a totally necessary function of their business and they know it. This is where you enter the business picture. They welcome honest, reliable bookkeepers who can do it for them. There have been many cases of dishonest bookeepers over the years. Always be honest.

Small business owners do not need, nor can they afford, full time bookkeepers. A service that offers this on a contract basis is ideal for these folks. To be successful at this, you must be accurate, thorough, honest and possess spreadsheet and accounting software proficiency. Your honesty and attention to detail must be impeccable. If you lack bookkeeping skills or accounting work you can get some basic learning courses at the college level to be ready to start this low cost and training home business. Most community colleges offer higher education courses in the classroom or online. In this, the computer age, you can now take up long distance learning with many colleges and universities across the country and even the world. Advanced classes are also now available this way. If you are changing from a career that you excelled in and maintain an interest, you can offer consulting services in that field and industry. Consulting is a multi billion dollar industry in the USA alone.

Many retirees are doing this for income and even more so, for something to do to keep active. Age and experience are major assets for you if you are older. Consulting gets more popular as everyone from MDs to n business start up entrepreneurs need help from experienced and competent experts. The men and women in this great general field increase every year as technology allows for unlimited distance communication and help. Anyone competent in virtually any field can now do consulting work. I use one myself and could not ever go on working my business without my consultant.

Interestingly, I consult with him also so we help each other. This keeps consulting costs down some. The honest trick is to know more about your specialization field than your clients for whom you work. You need to be dependable, organized, constantly available and able to convey materials and information needed accurately and fairly quickly. Many consulting businesses thrive today while working from home on the Internet. Customers prefer this method for convenience, speed and comfort. Briefly, here are the top Internet consulting businesses you can begin from your home. The first is advertising consultations, which may work on a small business Web site, if not designing then by setting up opt in marketing campaigns, writing content, developing downloadable brochures plus planning advertising strategies online and offline. Another is auditing consultancy which is another of the top Internet businesses you can begin from your home. You might be contracted to audit publication circulation, or any number of statistical documents for the goal of verification or decision making. Still another consulting field is business which offers different services and makes one of the best online businesses startable from home. As a business consultant, the service is important, to start up small businesses owners needing staff consultants for this valuable service. Many retirees from the fields of accountants, public relations and other professionals, provide desktop publishing assistance by helping to write business plans. They know how to secure start up loans while assisting in the purchases and choices of business hardware and software. Other fields of Internet businesses you can start from home include business writing, editing services, career counseling, communications services, computer consultation, executive search and grant writing.

If you have training and experience in any of these fields you can start small and grow at your own pace.

If any person were to tell you there are no risks when it comes to a work at home-based business opportunity, they are wrong. There is no success guarantee, there are high stakes, however, there is also no failure guarantees at the same time.

There are both upsides and downsides to joining a work at home-based business opportunity. If you are successful, of course you have high upsides. This includes unlimited earning potential, independence, schedule flexibility, and financial freedom. However, if you are not successful the downside is also high and not where you want to be, which might result in financial ruin.

Now you are probably wondering how you can become involved in a work at home-based business opportunity without suffering any of the downsides?

Business Types

You should first know the basics. It is important to understand that a work at home-based opportunity is an actual business and it should be treated as such. It is not just some fly by night, spare time opportunity you found. Because it is an actual business, you need to define it as a general partnership or a sole proprietorship. When it comes to sole proprietorship, as the sole owner of a work at home-based business opportunity, everything you own is at stake. If you enter into a general partnership, you at least have another person to lean on and help you with the work and investment needed to operate a business. While there are other types of business, these are the two main types that generally go along with a work at home-based business opportunity.

In the Beginning

As you start your work at home-based business opportunity, you may find that the prospect is both exciting and scary. It is very normal to feels this way as you get the feel of your business and begin to learn how you can address various issues that fall into your lap. The best thing to do is take a deep breath and relax. Because almost every new business owner goes through the same thing, the following can help you deal with the anxiety that you may find.

Keep it Real

This is ultimately important and should be applied to all aspects of the work at home-based opportunity from the beginning to the outcome. Instant wealth and get rich quick methods simply do not work. It takes most successful entrepreneurs of a work at home-based business opportunity a year before they start to see the success.

Determine your Product

No matter what you decide to offer services or product, the key is to make the decision before you start. If you are going to operate a work at home-based business opportunity with products you need to determine how you are going to come up with the products. This means you need to evaluate delivery, operation, and manufacturing of the products. Some people opt to sell products created by others, known as affiliate marketing. This has turned out to be quite lucrative for many people.

Residual commission is one of the greatest advantages of providing services as a work at home-based business opportunity. What this means is that as long as the customer keeps using that service, you will have a monthly income. A web hosting service is a great example of a work at home-based business opportunity.

Start spreading the news, and articles are the way to do it. The vast resource that is the internet has given small home business owners a chance to make a true living by giving them an equal platform to promote their business. One of the best ways to utilize the internet, in this respect, is to publish articles. This gives you an established credibility through your own knowledge. Put your knowledge to work for you. When you show people that you know what you are taking about, they will gravitate to you.

The world wide web is a place where people can get lost and confused if they do not keep their wits about them. This fact is what makes scam artists spring to action and set traps for unsuspecting web surfers. Now that we are in the new millennium, people are more wary to trust anything they see while they are on the internet. This is where your articles really help you and your business. By putting your knowledge in a public forum, potential customers have the ability to evaluate your business, gain trust in your business, and are therefore more likely to buy from someone they trust, you.

Assisting others is always a great way to build confidence with customers and to spread new information about products, services, ideas, or concepts. People are constantly looking for help in one capacity or another. By being a broadcaster of information or passing along insight, you will start a chain reaction that will bring in massive benefits. Using articles to promote business is not a new concept, newspaper and magazines have done this since their existence, but we can get so caught up in our own process of living that we forget to share what we know so that others can gain something out of it.

So send out articles to friends and family, post them on the internet, and put yourself in a position to progress. Being helpful and kind through the sharing of your own experience isn?t hard, it just has to be done.

Great success isn?t always moving a mountain, but you do have to make a move.

How to Start a Business in Oregon (Smartstart Series (Entrepreneur Press).)

June 29th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

This series covers the federal, state, and local regulations imposed on small businesses, with concise, friendly and up-to-the-minute advice on each critical step of starting your own business.
Customer Review: A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary.

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can’t do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be “educated customers” ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business’ structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don’t treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn’t. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can’t complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars! Click to Buy Now!

Would you like to work from your home computer? I’m sure many of us here would, if not you won’t be here reading this article. In my opinion, Internet businesses is one of the best home based business that anyone could start.

To start an online business, you basically need a computer or laptop and an Internet access. I’m sure many of us knows a thing or two about using the computer, since it has been a daily routine in our life. Big companies are using computer to aid their business process and families are using computers at home to shop online and do internet banking, the list goes on.

How about making use of your computer and Internet access to make you some money off the Internet? I’m sure you and I would like the idea but you ask yourself, “Can I do it?, I only know how to surf and check emails?” I’m sure you can because I was like you when I first started. What you need is the will to learn and apply what you learn, do you agree?

Did you start your own traditional business before? If you have, I’m sure to start one you will need a huge sum of money and not only that, you will have monthly overhead. Ok, now lets put traditional business aside for the time beginning, and take a look why Internet could be the best home-based business that you can start.

To start an online business, besides having a computer or a laptop and Internet access, you need to have something to sell, either a physical product or a service. You can either create your own product and sell it online, or be an affiliate of a company and sell their products or simply buy and sell at eBay. These are some ways you can start your online business venture from home.

Unlike traditional business, the cost to start an online business is very little. You basically need, a web hosting, email account and a product to sell, all in which will cost you as little as $50 per month. This is why starting your own online business could be the best home based business you can start with basic cost of only $50 a month.

However, you may think where are you going to get your products from or how are you going to create your product. This could take time to develop a suitable product. Indeed, I truly agree with you that this can be tedious but there are always alternatives. Remember earlier I mentioned about being an affiliate and sell the company’s product? Signing up as an affiliate is one of the best ways that you can start your internet home based business. Your affiliate company will have everything ready for you, your product, website, salescopy etc. All you need to do is to promote the product or service online and leave the rest to your company, isn’t it simple?

Internet businesses is definitely one of the best home based business that anyone can start with, considering that the start up cost is so low. All you need to do is to find the right product and market it online. And in no time, you probably be making 10 times more than your monthly cost.

Terry Tay is an online entrepreneur. He is with a team of successful internet marketers who are experiencing exponential growth in their online home businesses. Find out more on how you can ride on for FREE at http://www.Success-eBusiness.com

Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work: How to Use the Enneagram System for Success

June 27th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

A proven system for improving your own work and for working better in a team

Used by such organizations as the Walt Disney Company, Silicon Graphics, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the CIA, the Enneagram is a proven psychological system based on nine number types that helps people achieve self-awareness and develop strategic approaches to interpersonal interactions. In Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work, Enneagram teacher and business consultant Ginger Lapid-Bodga shows professionals how to apply this popular tool to their work as a way to improve their productivity and help them build positive relationships among coworkers. This practical guide explains how to use the Enneagram to:

Customer Review: Finally…
The genuine nugget in this book is its use of the Enneagram to move forward the original Center for Creative Leaderhip research about what derails successful professionals. Lapid-Bogna’s gift is to communicate the most profound and deeply thoughtful insights with deceptively casual language. I agree it needs to be read twice: Once to understand the techniques it describes, and a second time to appreciate how she builds on her hard-earned understanding of what works and doesn’t work in OD and career development. Then, consider reading it a third time to appreciate the Enneagram for the doors it opens to truly deep personal growth. Not just another book written as a practice-building marketing piece for the author. It contains enough material for at least two books.
Customer Review: The most practical enneagram book out there for business applications
I love this book. I am an executive coach and I find this very useful for helping my Enneagram-aware clients apply the model directly and quickly to work situations — to help debug relationships, communications, conflilct, etc.

I especially like Lapid-Bogda’s distinctions and examples around “Pinch” and “Crunch” for each of the types.

I don’t know of any other books except Michael Goldberg’s “The Nine Ways of Working” that fill this business-application niche quite so well.

Highly recommended for those who need a practical, hands-on way of using the Ennegram in day to day work interactions. Click to Buy Now!

All home-based business owners want to be successful. They usually also want to promote their business online.

As it turns out, this does not have to be a difficult process. Here are the remaining steps to take in order to get a product or service online in 7 days or less.

Begin researching for advertising and other marketing opportunities. This is very important. Why? Because, bottom line, in the business world, the best marketer always wins. So, it’s extremely important that you have an outstanding advertising plan. Here are some of the options that you can include in your plan:

-Pay per-click search engines such as Google Adwords, Overture.com. Findwhat.com, and others. With these search engines, you place an ad and then pay based on what you bid if someone clicks on it. Google Adwords is a good place to start.

-Ezines. An ezine is an email newsletter. It is important to advertise in those that are related to the topic of your home-based business. A good resource to use, for a fee, is the Directory of Ezines. This service makes the ezine selection process very easy. Of course, you can also go to Google and just type in a keyword for your business and then “ezine”. This also would get you a huge list for free. Ezine Universe is good as well.

-Discussion Boards and Forums. This is where people with like interests gather together and talk about them. If you go to Google.com and look unde the “groups” section, you will find tons of discussions. Also, if you type in “forum” in a search engine related to your keyword, you will find many results. Make sure, though, that when you post, that you don’t blatantly advertise. This will usually get you kicked out. You can create a signature file with your website and information so people can click if they choose.

Once you have your marketing plan underway, you can begin testing your site and making sure it works. Also, if you have products that need to be downloaded, make sure the downloading process is running smoothly as well.

You will also need to work on expanding your marketing as well as start testing and tweaking. Here are some ideas:

-Add an Affiliate Program

-Form a list of joint venture partners and begin to profit from them

-Search for linking partners

-Improve your Search Engine Optimization of your home-based business site

-Post Classified Ads with services such as Ablewise.com and USAFreeAds.com

Another method that you need to have in your aresenal to get your home-based business online in 7 days or less is to find sites that sell complementary products or services. Why? Because if they have an affiliate program, they might be interested in sending your offer to their list. This can be done by using the search engines. ALl the contact information should be on the site. If it is not there, you can always go to www.whois.com, and then type in the URL of the site which will give you contact information.

Last but not least, keep careful watch over your Google Adwords Campaign. You are looking for keywords that convert into sales. Google actually has a tracking code that you can put on your site that whill show you which keyword campaings convert to sales. If you see that your keywords aren’t converting, change them!

If done right to start with, getting your home-based business product or service online can not only be easy, but also a true wealth builder! Follow the steps above and be on your way to having a successful home-based business.

Elementary School Success Standard 2006

Customer Review: Ripoff
What a HUGE disappointment. I was looking for an alternative to the Summer Bridge books for my 8 year old son to finish out the summer and thought that, since computer time is prized at our house, he’d be motivated by CD-ROMs. After only an hour and a half with these CDs, we’re both perplexed and annoyed.

1) Installation: Each CD must be installed separately - language arts, phonics, math, etc - so they don’t talk to each other about your child’s performance. But it turns out, that would require waaay more thought than has been put into this software.

2) This one’s the clincher: The box says ages 6-12, grades 1-6. However, when you sign in, you’re not asked your child’s age or permitted to create any kind of profile apart from entering his/her name. This seems odd because, you know, how do you get to the lesson content that is age-appropriate. Short answer? You don’t!

TOPICS has tried to create single lessons that work for 6-12 year olds! That’s right. For each course, there is just one little set of lessons. Earth Science, for example, contains two stories - one about earthworms, the other about moths. That’s it for 1st graders and 6th graders - one set of lessons, one set of puzzles and games to reinforce ideas. Instead of being just right for my 3rd grader, oddly we found that the lessons were either too hard or too easy.

3) Typos: Besides being age-inappropriate, the lessons and games all contain significant typos that threw my son off. With the little content that is provided, you’d think they could’ve read for context rather than just run spellcheck. Examples: “Washington” was spelled “Washinton.” In one 2-paragraph page about earthworms, we were told that earthworms don’t have but do need eyes underground (a do/don’t typo), that they are burned by UV rays the same “hat” (should be “that”) cause sunburn, and yeah, there was another typo I’ve forgotten. But, yes, 3 typos that misled my son on one page of text. Awful…By then, he was saying, this is JUNK.

4) Interface: There is a bizarre game which is the only way to work on History/Social Studies course material. The game itself made no sense to either of us. Help was no help. A Prewriting exercise gives you some instructions, and then just stops. No explanation. No feedback. What about this could I not have done on my own?

5) And yes, that voice is pretty unbearable. It’s a bad recording of a woman with a stuffy nose and a harsh tone to her voice.

At $40, it is a CRIME that you can’t return software. If this is the best of what’s out there, I suggest signing up for some supplemental courses with an online education provider or signing up for something similar at Kaplan SCORE or Huntington Learning. These CDs will only frustrate and discourage your kids.

By contrast, do check out Chessmaster, 10th edition. It does allow creation of profiles with age and experience level, and has boards for kids which give feedback in an encouraging way. TOPICS could learn a lot from this software which we purchased the same day. Click to Buy Now!
